La locura en Aguascalientes y sus cuatro estados de influencia durante el porfiriato

Abstract

El presente trabajo busca explicar, hasta donde las evidencias históricas lo permiten, las diversas realidades que se dieron en Aguascalientes alrededor del fenómeno de la locura durante el porfiriato, periodo de la historia mexicana que abarca la última cuarta parte del siglo XIX y los primeros once años del XX. El mismo está dividido en tres capítulos. En el primero se ofrece una historiografía de la psiquiatría desde la antigüedad grecorromana hasta su nacimiento como ciencia positiva a finales del siglo XVIII en Europa occidental, auxiliado por los avances de la medicina científica, que fueron a la vez posibles a raíz de que la investigación en esta ciencia se comenzó a hacer utilizando el método científico y los procedimientos investigativos surgidos a la luz del positivismo comtiano. Los avances en la concepción de las diversas formas de locura y en el tratamiento de éstas fueron permeando a México paulatinamente por distintos canales antes, durante y después de su independencia, y tuvieron un impacto en la forma como éstas fueron tratadas; la pregunta de investigación que se intenta contestar es ¿Hasta dónde estos avances tuvieron impacto en la forma en que se trató a la locura en Aguascalientes en esos años? En el segundo capítulo se habla de la obra psicológica de tres Aguascalientes. Hoy en día psiquiatría y psicología tienen roles bien definidos en cuanto a las formas de locura o, dicho en términos modernos “enfermedades mentales” que cada una debe abordar pero, hasta mediados del siglo XIX, la psicología no había generado formas de ayudar a curar la locura; sólo se le veía como un referente que ayudaba a explicitar los hechos de la conciencia y sus parámetros de normalidad. Estas tres obras tuvieron un impacto en el entendimiento de la psicología en México y en la pavimentación del camino de su utilización hasta mediados del siglo XX. En el tercer capítulo se habla de las diversas formas en que se manifestó la locura durante el porfiriato en Aguascalientes, de la forma en que éstas fueron atendidas y de diferentes fenómenos sociales que se dieron alrededor de sus diversas manifestaciones.

The purpose of this investigative work is to try to explain, as much as objective historical evidences allow, the different manifestations of insanity that came into existence in Aguascalientes during the historical period in Mexican history known as the “porfiriato”, which took place between the fourth quarter of the nineteenth century and the first eleven years of the twentieth. The work is divided into three chapters. The first one talks about the history of psychiatry starting with the ancient Greek-Roman times and up until its birth as a positive science by the end of the XVIII century in Eastern Europe, which was favored by the birth of scientific medicine, made possible through the use of the scientific method. Advances in the understanding of the different forms of insanity and in their treatment that were produced in Europe all through the nineteenth century, were constantly being adopted by Mexican doctors as they were produced, and they had an impact on the way those were treated. The investigative question that underlies the organization of all this work is how much the contributions of modern psychiatry had an impact on the way insanity was treated in Aguascalientes during those years. The second chapter, talks about three books on psychology that were written by three individuals born in Aguascalientes. Nowadays, psychiatry and psychology have well defined roles as to which forms of insanity -today known as mental illnesses- each one is supposed to attend, but up until mid-nineteenth century, psychology hadn’t emerged as a science that was supposed to aid in the assisting of the insane; it was only seen as a producer of referents of normalness as opposed to insanity. These three books helped ease the understanding of psychology in Mexico, and its practical use in the mid-twentieth century. The third chapter talks about the different forms in which insanity manifested itself in Aguascalientes during the period under study. The different pathologies and the phenomena that took place around them.
