La industria del tabaco como elemento clave del patrimonio industrial de Irapuato, Guanajuato

Abstract

Resumen Este estudio analiza el impacto de la industria cigarrera en la transformación urbana y sociocultural de Irapuato, Guanajuato, durante los siglos XIX y XX. El objetivo fue determinar el papel de esta industria como componente del patrimonio industrial local. Se empleó una metodología de enfoque mixto, predominantemente cualitativo, que combinó análisis documental, entrevistas semiestructuradas y encuestas. Los resultados evidencian que la cigarrera no solo promovió la expansión física de la ciudad mediante infraestructura y vivienda obrera, sino que también influyó en la configuración de identidades colectivas y prácticas culturales asociadas al trabajo industrial. Se concluye que, pese a su desmantelamiento, el legado material e inmaterial de esta industria representa una oportunidad para su valorización como patrimonio cultural y su incorporación en estrategias de desarrollo urbano sostenible. Abstract This study analyzes the impact of the cigarette industry on the urban and sociocultural transformation of Irapuato, Guanajuato, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The objective was to determine the role of this industry as a component of the city’s industrial heritage. A mixed-methods approach, primarily qualitative, was employed, combining documentary analysis, semi-structured interviews, and surveys. The findings indicate that the cigarette industry not only drove the physical expansion of the city through infrastructure and workers’ housing but also shaped collective identities and cultural practices linked to industrial labor. The study concludes that, despite its dismantling, the material and immaterial legacy of this industry constitutes an opportunity for cultural heritage valorization and its integration into sustainable urban development strategies.
