El principio de la sustentabilidad en el entorno de la construcción se ha vuelto mucho más significativo en las últimas décadas, lo que resulta en un impulso para el desarrollo de sistemas de construcción que sean más eficientes en el uso de energía y en durabilidad, así como en la utilización de menos recursos naturales y mano de obra; y que optimicen el tiempo de construcción.
La vivienda es una de las necesidades primordiales del ser humano, en torno a ella se llevan una infinidad de actividades cotidianas. Por eso, para garantizar la calidad de vida, es importante considerar los materiales con los que está constituida, la ubicación de los diferentes espacios, sus dimensiones, así como la disponibilidad de infraestructura básica y servicios. En años recientes se ha registrado un importante crecimiento de la industria de vivienda en el país como resultado de los millones de casas que se han construido, así como por el financiamiento que existe en el mercado para adquirirlas. Sin embargo, a pesar de estos esfuerzos, en México todavía existe un importante rezago habitacional. Alrededor del 33% de las familias mexicanas (8.9 millones) no gozan del derecho de habitar una vivienda adecuada, ya sea porque viven en situación de hacinamiento, al compartir su vivienda con uno o más hogares, o habitan en viviendas construidas con materiales deteriorados o de poca calidad y duración. Es por esto que, para la construcción de habitación unifamiliar y plurifamiliar, los sistemas constructivos a base de block de poliestireno de alta densidad (EPS) en sus diferentes modalidades Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) han ganado de una creciente popularidad por su capacidad para responder ante estas exigencias.
El muro ICF está configurado en base a unidades de Poliestireno Expandido (EPS) de alta densidad y concreto reforzado, el cual provee un muro rígido, teniendo además las propiedades de aislación térmica y acústica incorporada.

En este documento se aborda el estudio de un subconjunto de ICF, que tiene las características de utilizar una menor cantidad de concreto que los muros ICF convencionales. Este sistema tiene por nombre screen grid (SG).
El hecho de que el muro lleve implícita una disminución en la cantidad de concreto, hace que el sistema SGICF sea atractivo para los constructores, aunque desafortunadamente el sistema tiene como limitación el escaso conocimiento acerca de su funcionamiento ya que, para su diseño no se cuenta con normativa en México que regule los parámetros mínimos que deberán cumplir.
En esta investigación se desarrolla un análisis comparativo del sistema SGICF considerando muros de diferente relación de esbeltez, la contribución del EPS del muro y una reducción del 25% en el volumen de concreto, que es sustituida por los blocks de EPS. Todo esto con el fin de obtener la resistencia para tomar cargas verticales y laterales, así como su capacidad a distorsionarse bajo la aplicación de acciones cíclicas.
Debido a que no se cuenta con ayudas de diseño para este tipo de sistemas constructivos, se realizó un modelo analítico en el software de elementos finitos Abaqus, donde se consideró el muro modelando los bloques de EPS, el concreto y el acero de refuerzo, tomando como base para su revisión lo establecido en las Normas Técnicas Complementarias para diseño y construcción de estructuras de concreto (NTC-C 2004).
Con los resultados de los modelos numéricos, se realizó el ensaye de cuatro muros SGICF ante cargas cíclicas, partiendo de variables como lo son la relación de esbeltez, el tipo de concreto y la ausencia del material EPS. Todo con el fin de saber la capacidad a la resistencia, rigidez y ductilidad.
De los resultados arrojados por el programa Abaqus, se puede concluir que con un porcentaje de vacíos inferior al 25% del volumen total de concreto, el muro sigue comportándose como si no tuviera vacíos.

De los resultados de las pruebas se observa que el block EPS adherido al muro SGICF aumentó la resistencia lateral hasta de un 26 % a un 31% y la rigidez del muro de un 25 % a un 77 % comparado con muestras idénticas probados con el EPS eliminado.
The principle of sustainability in the environment of construction has become much more significant in the last decades, which results in a rush for the development of more efficient construction systems in energy use and durability, as well as the reduction in the use of natural resources and workforce, also they may optimize the building time.
As we all know, a place to live is a priority need in human life, around it an infinite number of activities take place. Because of this, in order to ensure life quality, it is important to consider some points such as the materials that were used to build it, the location of several spaces or rooms, dimensions, as well as a clear disposition of basic infrastructure and services. In recent years an important increase in living industry has been registered in the country as an obvious result of the millions of houses that have been built, as well as the actual financing that exists in the market in order to acquire them. However, in spite of these efforts, in Mexico there is still a lag in the housing topic. Up to 33% of Mexican families (8.9 million) do not have the right to live in a real living place, whether because of overcrowding, or they live in a shared house, also they could live in housing built with wrong material, or a lack of quality and lifetime. For that reason, for the house construction that may be used for one or more families, the building systems with high density polystyrene block (EPS) as a basis, in its different modalities Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) have won a notable popularity for the response to these requirements.
The ICF wall is configured with expanded polystyrene (EPS) of high quality and reinforced concrete, which provides a solid wall, including, besides, the incorporation of thermic and acoustic isolation.
In this document the study of a subset of ICF is addressed, with the characteristics of using a minor quantity of concrete compared with the traditional ICF walls. This system has the name “screen grid” (SG).

The fact that the wall takes an implicit decrease in the quantity of concrete, makes the SGICF system attractive to building companies, although the system has as a limitation the scarce knowledge about its functioning, because for the design there is no normative in Mexico that may regulate the minimum parameteres that it’s supposed to check.
In this research, a comparative analysis of the SGICF system is developed considering walls with a different relation of slenderness, the EPS contribution to the wall and a visible reduction of 25% in the concrete’s volume, being replaced by EPS blocks. All of this with the goal of obtaining the resistance for lateral and vertical loads, also the capacity of distortion under the application of cyclic actions.
As long as there is no immediate help with the design of this constructive system, an analytic model was created in the finite elements software Abaqus, in this project the wall was considered modeling the EPS blocks, concrete and reinforcement steel, and as a base for the supervision was taken the established in the Complementary Technics Norms for design and building of concrete structures (NTC-2004) for its acronym in Spanish.
With the results of the numeric methods, an essay was made of four walls SGICF against cyclic loads, starting from variables such as the relation in slenderness, the concrete type and the EPS material absence. All this in order to know the capacity for resistance, stiffness and ductility.
From the results expelled by the Abaqus program, it is possible to conclude that with an emptiness percentage below 25% of the total concrete volume, the wall still acts like it has no empty spaces.

Also from these results, it is noted that the EPS block adherent to the SGICF wall increased the lateral resistance, initially at 26%, up to 31% as well as the wall stiffness, from a 25% to a 77%, compared to exact samples tested with deleted EPS.
